What a technical marketing partner actually does.

On This Page:

    TL;DR

Technical marketing is the systems half of marketing, the tools, data and automation that make the creative and commercial work actually run. The Wayward Co. is a technical marketing partner: work with us fractionally, on one-off projects, or as tech consultants. We do our best work installing a proven three-system base for companies going from near-zero to real momentum.

    What is "technical marketing"?

Technical marketing is the systems half of marketing. Here's the one-liner I keep coming back to:

Technical marketing is the systems half of marketing, the tools, data and automation that make the creative and commercial work actually run.

The way I've always split it in my head: on one side you've got creative and brand, the big, bold campaign ideas, the design, the human bit that no machine should own. On the other side you've got the systems that make all of it operate. That second half is us. Martech. The plumbing. The automation, enrichment and tracking that quietly turns clever ideas into revenue.

It's not a rival to creative marketing. It's the layer underneath it that makes creative marketing actually work at scale.

Why does it sit inside every kind of marketing?

Because every marketer alive is already using it, whether they call it that or not. A designer uses tools and automations to move faster. A brand marketer needs a system to test slogans and campaign ideas. A GTM engineer lives and dies by enrichment and data. Growth and account-based marketers are stitching signals together all day long.

All of those roles still exist. Technical marketing runs through every one of them.

"Every version of marketer still exists, creative, brand, growth, ABM, GTM. Technical marketing is the systems layer sitting inside all of them."

So we don't replace your creative team or your brand marketer. We give them better tools, cleaner data and automations that make their jobs easier, and we build the engines that put their work in front of the right people at the right time.

What are the three ways to work with us?

Three, depending on what you need and how hands-on you want us to be. No lock-in on any of them, you own everything we build.

    Way inWhat it isBest when
Fractional marketersSenior operators embedded in your team, part-time, owning the technical marketing function end to end.You need real marketing firepower but can't (or shouldn't) hire a full-time senior for it yet.
One-off projectsA scoped build with a clear start and finish, a CRM setup, a content engine, a GTM system, handed over working. You know the thing you need built and you want it done properly, once.
Tech consultingWe audit your stack, tell you the truth, and map what to fix, buy, bin or build next. You're paying for platforms you're barely using and want a straight answer on what to do about it.

Senior operators only, on every one of these. No junior hand-off. The person who scopes the work is the person who does it. You can see the full range on our expertise page.

Where do we do our best work?

When a company has a few things running, doesn't know what's next, and needs someone to install a real base. That's where I do my best work, and it's not close.

"Taking a company from near-zero to a real base is where the impact is biggest. Fractionally improving something already mature is great, but it's never the same leap."

Usually it's a startup or a Series A. They've heard about AEO, GTM engineering, content engines, there's a hundred things they could do, and no clear answer on what to tackle first. So I come in and install a base I've now repeated across around a dozen clients, adjusted for each sector. Going from almost nothing to a working base is a bigger leap than nudging a conversion rate up on something that's already humming.

The base is three systems that feed each other:

    1. Referrals

Still the biggest driver in B2B, and the most neglected. We automate staying top-of-mind with the people who already know you. No spammy "hey, got any referrals for me?", that's gross. Instead, every existing customer and contact quietly drops into an audience that keeps seeing the founder's content. So when someone in their world needs what you do, you're the name that surfaces. Old-school relationship-building, with a bit of CRM automation doing the remembering for you.

    2. A content engine

A system that finds the real questions people are actually asking, uses AI to draft a brief, and then, crucially, pulls a genuine answer out of a real human inside your company. Someone on your team answers one or two questions via voice note, with their actual insight, and that's what makes the piece worth reading. It's not pure AI slop. It's your expertise, at speed. That content feeds your AEO/GEO/SEO, which is the sort of thing that just keeps stacking, answer more questions, show up in more places, compound. (Full disclosure: this very article was written that exact way. AI drafted the brief, I answered into a voice note, a human shaped it. If it reads like a person, that's why.)

    3. GTM engineering

People think this is the scary one. It isn't. We find an audience matching your ideal customer profile, then pick a timely signal that flips them into "they have this pain right now" mode, say, a company hiring three or more technical roles in a fortnight, or roles that have sat open for three-plus months. When the signal fires, they drop into a LinkedIn audience and start seeing posts from a senior person on your team speaking directly to that exact pain. That's it. You've found the right people, at the right moment, and put a real human in front of them. You can make GTM engineering as fancy as you like, but that base version already gets results.

And here's the good bit: the three reinforce each other. The content engine feeds the referral audience and the GTM audience. Everyone gets re-shared. One system, three loops, all compounding. See what that looks like in practice in our client stories.

What does a typical engagement look like?

We start by looking at what you've already got, the tools, the data, the half-built automations, and telling you the truth about it. Then we agree what to tackle first. For most base builds, that's the three systems above, sequenced so you feel the impact early rather than waiting six months for a big reveal.

We build inside your accounts, using tools like HubSpot, Clay, LinkedIn Campaign Manager and n8n where they fit, never for the sake of it. It's all yours. If we walked away tomorrow, it keeps running. Pricing is quote-based and scoped to the job, because bolting you into a retainer you can't leave isn't a partnership, it's a hostage situation.

    How do you start?

Tell us where you're stuck. Request a quote and we'll have a proper conversation, no deck, no pitch theatre, about whether a fractional, a project or a bit of consulting is the right way in. If it's a base build, we'll tell you. If you don't actually need us yet, we'll tell you that too.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are you an agency?
    remove
    add

No, we're a partner. Senior operators only, no junior hand-offs, and no shiny pitch followed by whoever's cheapest doing the actual work. The person who scopes your project is the person who builds it.

    What's the minimum engagement?
    remove
    add

There isn't a fixed one. A one-off project can be a single scoped build; a fractional arrangement is ongoing but part-time. We scope to the job and quote it, rather than forcing you into a minimum retainer.

Do we own what you build?
    remove
    add

Yes, completely. We build inside your tools and accounts, so every system, automation and audience is yours. No lock-in, if we walked away tomorrow, it all keeps running.

    How fast can you start?
    remove
    add

Quickly, because we're senior operators, not a queue of hand-offs. Once we've agreed scope, we can usually begin within days rather than weeks. Request a quote and we'll give you a real timeline.
